Brown patterned cloth, front cover illus. in silver foil, spine panel lettered in gold foil, bevelled edges. 1st ptg. of this (the seventh) edition (stated on lower title pg.) Cloth is lightly rubbed at corners and along edges, with some surface rubbing and slight flecking to portions of both covers. Both hinges show slight evidence of repair to split paper but are absolutely firm and intact. xvi,386 pp., illus. Text block edges somewhat dulled by age, interior clean and bright. Former owner's signature (dated Christmas 1896, meaning that this edition was actually issued prior to its stated 1897 publication date) and name-stamp on front blank preceding frontis., address inscription on rear blank, otherwise unmarked, showing this copy to have been purchased by or gifted to Raymond E. Klein of Newport, KY, directly across the Ohio River from the author's Cincinnati - and likely an associate. Overall, a clean, tight copy showing light use and only cosmetic issues. An early utopian fantasy. Very scarce.
