Original editions, newly rebound in dark brown leatherette cloth, lettered in gold foil on spine panels, with new head- and tail-bands, new endpapers. Both text blocks are fully original and unaltered, with all folding maps/plates present. Interiors are notably clean and bright, with light foxing/soiling evident only to front/rear blanks, text block edges darkened/soiled by age. Vol. I (1807) + Vol. II (1810), of (4). x,904 + viii,1007 pp., illus. - Vol. I with large folding map ("A Map of North Britain, During British and Roman Times) at p. 1, genealogical table of the Scottish kings at p. 417, also several engraved plates; Vol. II with large folding table ("Tabular Statement of the several Shires of Scotland; with their ancient Divisions") at p. 26. [Vol. I] Book I: The Roman Period - 80 A.D. 446; Book II: The Pictish Period, 446 A.D. 843 ; Book III: the Scotish Period 843 A.D. 1097 ; Book IV: The Scoto-Saxon Period, from 1097 to 1306 A.D. [Vol. II] "From the ancient annals of Scotland, this second volume proceeds, after some introductory intimations, to give its topographical history, in a sequence of shires, beginning with the most southern, and proceeding to the northern, in a regular consecution...in eight sections" (name, situation and extent, natural objects, antiquities, establishment as a shire, civil history, agriculture, manufactures and trade, ecclesiastical history). Presents virtually "as new" (with note to rebinding), with clean, fully intact interiors, a very durable and functional set.
