Publisher's original brown cloth, elaborately decorated in black and gilt on front and spine panels. Mildly rubbed along joints, with minor exposure at corners, chipped/frayed with minor strips of loss at spine extremities. Text block edges somewhat dulled by age, but clean interior. viii,378 pp., with 76 illus. by Arthur Hughes. Lovely decorated binding. Early, scarce reprint after the 1871 1st American edition, dated 1882 beneath Routledge imprint on lower title [2nd American edition?]. Slight evidence of repair at title page; we are unclear as to whether this printing originally contained a frontispiece, but this copy does not have a frontis. at present, and there appears to be the remnants of a single leaf (no longer present) in the binding gutter between the front flyleaf and title page. The net proceeds from the sale of this copy revert to the Allentown Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) to support scholarships for women enrolled at Lehigh Valley (Pennsylvania) colleges whose studies have been interrupted.
