Tan paper covered boards, lettered in blue. Several thin strips of dried and darkened tape residue cosmetically blemish an otherwise quite decently preserved copy. Chipped with small (approx. 1/4") V-shaped loss at head of spine. Endpapers show several small areas of tape residue; interior is otherwise clean. Taped to a front blank is a typed copy of H. H. Holmes' review of the novel as it originally appeared in the New York Herald Tribune book review column of 15 June 1952. Front flyleaf inscribed in dark and bold blue ink occupying approx. 40% of the page: "June 2, 1952 / To Ethel Mehrlust / With sincere appreciation / of her interest / in my first published novel / Cyril Kornbluth" (scan available upon request). We have not found additional information about Ms. Mehrlust or her connection to Kornbluth. Dust jacket shows a number of darkened tape residue marks on verso, several of which bleed through on the flaps and rear panel; also shows wrinkling from possible moisture exposure (though it exhibits no dampstaining per se), chipped spine extremities with some loss at head of spine, not affecting lettering; short closed tear with associated creasing along top front edge; unclipped, showing $2.75 publisher's price; now in mylar sleeve. 218 pp. Despite the noted condition issues, this copy is not ex-library. Stated 1st edition. Author's first novel. Scarce and significant signature and inscription, likely among only a handful of surviving inscribed copies of this early and obscure novel. Because Kornbluth died prematurely at age 35 in 1958, signed copies of his works are seldom offered. Accompanying this volume will be another copy, identical in format but a book club ediiton, VG+ in VG+ to Near Fine dust jacket.
