7 Dracula [1927 StagePlay Edition in Unrestored Original Dust Jacket]
Stoker, Bram
New York: Grosset and Dunlap, 1927. First Thus
Cloth 12mo - over 6" - 7" tall. Near Fine. Fair Book
Early reprint edition of Stoker's classic, known as the Stage-Play edition, issued to coincide with the premiere of Balderston and Dean's stage adaptation of the novel in New York in October 1927 - produced, incidentally, by Horace Liveright, who often sold reprint rights to G&D in this era. This StagePlay edition is the first reprint of the 10th (1927) Doubleday, Page edition, which was the 11th American edition overall (the first being Doubleday & McClure, 1899). Orange cloth, front cover bordered in black, lettered in black on front cover and spine panel. ix,354,[2] pp. A notably well-preserved copy, showing only minimal shelf wear in the form of slight rubbing at corners and spine extremities, text block edges typically a bit dulled by age, central rear cover a bit soiled or darkened (possibly offsetting from dust jacket). Firm, square binding, clean and unmarked interior, clean endsheets, front flyleaf very slightly thumbed. Main text followed by 2 pp. publisher's ads, including "Detective Stories by J. S. Fletcher" listing only 13 titles, from "Henry Marchmont" through "Middle Temple Murder," as opposed to the more typical 17 titles, suggesting an earlier issue but still from 1927, as the listing includes "The Green Rope" and "The Passenger to Folkestone" (both first published that year). Unrestored, original color illus. dust jacket in dark green, orange, and white is the version depicting a woman sleeping, draped by a sheet, overshadowed by a large outline of Count Dracula's head, highlighted by large, hypnotic eyes, in the background, with the legends "Was he beast, man or vampire?" (top edge) and "Most Sensational Mystery Novel of the Day!" (bottom edge), the verso listing other G&D titles then in print. The DJ shows considerable wear, having shielded the binding well from harm, but is intact in most essentials, showing loss to lower spine panel measuring 2 1/2" along rear joint and 1" along front joint (approx. 15% of panel), with a closed tear just below the sub-title "A Novel of Horror and Thrills," several horizontal creases and an area of relatively minor soiling to rear panel; mildly chipped at head of spine, creasing to lower front panel, rubbed flap folds and partially separated along front fold. We are confident in claiming the volume as solid Near Fine (noting the mild darkening of the central rear cover), and though the DJ can be evaluated as only Fair, it presents reasonably well with a nicely intact front panel retaining vibrant color, displaying as G to VG. Scarce early reprint, particularly in DJ. 032714
