2 A Class-Book of Botany, Designed for Colleges, Academies and Other Seminaries. In Two Parts. Part I: The Elements of Botanical Science. Part II: The Natural Orders. Illustrated By a Flora of the Northern, Middle and Western States.
Wood, Alphonso
Troy, NY and New York: Moore and Nims/A. S. Barnes and Co., 1859.
Quarter-Leather 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Good. N/A
Dark brown 1/4 leather, gilt-decorated spine panel, dark brown textured paper over boards. [ii],645,[iv],[ii] pp. Somewhat rubbed along joints, with some exposure at corners. Small indentation along lower rear edge. Firm binding, interior generally clean though a bit toned, with very scattered soiling/foxing most evident on flyleaves and early/late leaves, nothing of significance. Small area of surface paper loss at lower front corner. Former owner signature on front pastedown. Undated edition, given as 41st on lower title page. Broken type on copyright page, appears to have been copyrighted 1846. Original publisher's announcement tipped in on front flyleaf details a new work by the same author to appear early in 1860, implying this edition to be ca. 1859. 011530

3 A Class-Book of Botany, Designed for Colleges, Academies, and Other Seminaries. In Two Parts: Part I. The Elements of Botanical Science. Part II. The Natural Orders, Illustrated by a Flora of the Northern, Middle, and Western States.
Wood, Alphonso
Boston, MA: Crocker and Brewster, 1848. Second Edition
Full-Leather 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. VG+.
Brown 3/4 morocco, black morocco boards, lettered in gilt on spine panel. 2nd edition, revised and enlarged. 645 pp., illus. Some minor rubbing to leather, small chip of loss along bottom front edge, nicely preserved. Binding is definitely vintage but may not be original to volume; pale yellow vintage endpapers, head- and tail-bands. Interior is fully intact though foxed, ranging light to moderate, with neat archival tape repair on verso to a tear on the final index page and slight dampstaining evident at top corner through latter portions of text block, a minor cosmetic issue. Overall, decently preserved, more than acceptable, presenting as Near Fine, downgraded due only to internal foxing. Scarce under this imprint. 018059

Title page mostly detached, with approx. 4" closed tear extending from binding edge into "Management" in fourth line of title; also approx. 2 1/2" triangular sliver with paper loss extending from binding edge toward "Thomas" in author's name, but affecting no text. Two short triangular slivers with loss at same points on dedication leaf as well, affecting only "Q" in "Queen's" in heading. Interior shows light scattered foxing and occasional light soiling to margins, overall quite clean and preserved.
