Shakspere, William [William Shakespeare] Shakspere's Works [Shakespeare's Works] [Volumes I-XI (1-11)] New York D. Appleton and Co. 1882 Vellum Good N/A Volumes I-XI [1-11], uniformly bound in flexible vellum, lettered in black and red, with top text block edges in gilt, deckled edges. Published 1882-84. Each volume, approx. 350 pages, contains the full text of 3 or 4 plays, 36 total, all but Pericles, Prince of Tyre, which was not included in the First Folio and, at the time of publication of this set, still not universally accepted as substantially by Shakespeare. Housed in the remnants of the original storage box, sized slightly larger, suggesting that as issued, this set contained 12 volumes, the last likely containing the sonnets, perhaps the other poems, and/or a biography, now lacking. The spine panels of all 11 volumes are quite soiled, and soiling on the covers ranges light to moderate. Most of the top text block edges are dulled. Mildly rubbed/chipped spine extremities. Lower spine of Vol. II shows small area of surface paper loss. Bindings firm, interiors mildly toned but otherwise intact. Former owner's book plate mounted on front pastedown of each volume. Cosmetically compromised, but still quite acceptable, a vintage, and reasonably scarce, set that would serve well for casual reading and reference. Price:
