National Biscuit Shredded Wheat 1938 First Edition Unbound Very Good N/A
One of Tony Sarg's lesser known productions. Three cards from the 36-card series (35 animal cards + cover) came in every box of National Biscuit Shredded Wheat in ca. 1938, printed in blue on gray cardstock, intended for children to color with crayons. We have here the majority of the set, with duplicates (indicated in parentheses). Each oblong card, measuring approx. 4" x 7 1/4", depicts a funny animal scene; quite a few seem to anticipate the early manic art of Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss). The cards are reasonably intact: a few show partial coloring, but most are unmarked, mildly toned and with light handling wear. Cute, whimsical, quite scarce. CONTENTS: cover (3), 1 (2), 3 (2), 4 (2), 7 (2), 8 (2), 9, 10, 11 (2), 12, 13, 14, 15 (3), 16 (2), 17, 19 (2), 21 (3), 22 (2), 23 (2), 25 (2), 26 (3), 27 (2), 28 (3), 30 (3), 31 (4), 32 (4), 33 (3), 34 (4), 35 (2), also (2) cards from Nabisco's "How America Travels" set (ca. 1942). 67 cards total, lacking only 7 cards (2, 5, 6, 18, 20, 24, 29) for completion.

Color pictorial paper over boards, spiral-bound. Fully intact interior, illus. in color throughout by Sarg. Only slight wear to exterior, which shows a few light surface creases, nothing pronounced or profound, and slightly rubbed bottom edge. Magic Lenses pocket still present but contains only one of two original sets of lenses. Contains 6 fairy tales and other stories including Cinderella, Rumpelstiltskin, 3 Bears, Sleeping Beauty, Chicken Little, Animal Fair etc. Each story features a moveable, revolving picture (tab operated) with illustrations that appear to move when the reader wears the Magic Lenses. Highly collectible children's mechanical book.
