Dark olive morocco, decorated in blind and gilt, with raised binding bands, dentelled edges, all text block edges in gilt, with silk bookmark bound in. xvi,479 pp. Apparent 1st thus, copyrighted 1835. Leather modestly rubbed along edges and at corners, toned to a medium brown on spine panel. Front flyleaf neatly excised, also lacking approx. 50% of adjacent front blank, the remainder bearing a period gift inscription, dated Sept. 1841 at Spartanburg: "A tribute to the worth / of Miss Susan Jane Smith / of S.C. from her friend / Levi W. Lawler / of Ala." Interior shows scattered foxing, generally light, firm binding.
