Light green buckram, decorated in blind, lettered in gilt, bevelled edges, decorated endpapers. Small call label on lower spine panel, institutional book plate on rear pastedown, otherwise unmarked. Mild shelf wear, lightly rubbed at corners and extremities, a few light soil marks. Dampstaining along rear joint only has resulted in lightening of dye, otherwise unaffected. Front hinge separated but neatly repaired and firm. xiv,15-521 pp., illus. w/ b&w plates. One plate shows small notch of loss along fore-edge. Biography of Pennsylvania's governor during the Civil War. Respectably preserved copy of a scarce issue.

As originally issued, Egle's "Notes and Queries" came out in 12 volumes: 1st and 2nd Series (2 volumes), 3rd Series (3 volumes), 4th Series (2 volumes), and 5 Yearbooks issued annually from 1896 through 1900. Offered here is a partial vintage reprint set consisting of the 1st and 2nd Series (2 volumes, complete, reprint issued 1894-95; xi,496 + ix,471 pp.), 3rd Series (Vols. II and II only, lacking Vol. I, reprint issued 1896; x,496 + vii,565 pp.), and 4th Series (Vol. I only, lacking Vol. II, 1st edition issued 1893; viii,328 pp). All uniformly bound in original dark green cloth, with deckled edges. Cloth is considerably flecked/spotted, showing rubbed corners with some exposure; the hand-written title labels mounted on upper spine panels have mostly flaked away. Interiors, however, are clean and bright excepting some lightly foxed endpapers and prelims. 4 of the 5 volumes are inscribed on their title pages by Egle, dated 14 Sept. 1896, on behalf of himself and the Harrisburg Telegraph, to DeBenneville Randolph Keim, "Edge Mount," Reading, Pennsylvania. Edge-Mount was Keim's residence on the south face of Mt. Penn, across from the present-day Reading Central Catholic High School. Scarce in any form, Egle's Notes and Queries are rarely found with the editor's inscription.
