Buchanan, James The Administration on the Eve of the Rebellion: History of Four Years Before the War London Sampson Low, Son, and Marston 1865 First Edition Buckram Near Fine Not Issued First edition, rebound in dark green buckram, with title stamped in gold foil on spine panel, text block edges slightlly trimmed for uniformity, new endsheets. x,[9]-296 pp. Former owner's address label and private library inventory number in ink on lower rear flyleaf, else unmarked. Title page moderately foxed, with first several leaves lightly foxed, slight foxing scattered through a generally clean and bright interior. Includes, bound in at rear, an 8-pg. pamphlet of the publisher's forthcoming titles for Nov. 1865, sized slightly smaller than the main text. Vindication of the Buchanan administration, written by the former President himself. Buchanan's 1868 obituary in the New York Times mentions this publication in a less than glowing memorial: "Temporizing in this pitiful manner with the gravest crisis that ever fell upon a nation, he did nothing to prevent the accomplishment of secession; and when his successor, Abraham Lincoln, was inaugurated, on the 4th of March, 1861, he retired to the privacy of his home in Wheatland, followed by the ill-will of every section of the country. During the long and bitter struggle that ensued, Mr. Buchanan maintained the strictest privacy. In 1865 he published a history of his Administration, intended to be a justification of his course on the eve of the rebellion of the Southern States. The attempt was feeble and inconclusive, and made no impression on the judgment of the country." Very scarce first edition, issued in London in 1865, preceding the first American of the following year (Appleton, 1866), retitled as "Mr. Buchanan's Administration on the Eve of the Rebellion." Also the first published presidential memoir. A very durable copy ideal for historical society and other institutional collections. Exceptionally scarce. Price:
