14 American Military Equipage 1851-1872 [Volume II: State Forces]
Todd, Frederick P., with Maria P. Todd/Damerel, Michael J. McAfee, Lee A. Wallace Jr., and George Woodbridge
Chatham Square Press, 1983. First Edition
Cloth 4to - over 9" - 12" tall. Near Fine. Very Good Book Michael J. McAfee and others
"A description by word and picture of what the American soldier, sailor and marine of these years wore and carried, with emphasis on the American Civil War." Black /14 cloth, gray cloth-effect paper covered boards, lettered in red. [x],603-1331 pp., illus. with b&w plates, line drawings. Slightly soiled bottom text block corner and fore-edge, else virtually as issued. Former owner's printed book plate mounted on front flyleaf. Dust jacket chipped at head of spine and along bottom rear edge, mildly rubbed at heel of spine and corners, with closed tear at top rear corner and rubbed along rear flap fold, now in mylar. This Volume II publishes Part 4 (State Forces), including glossary and index, of what was originally intended as a 6-volume series, the first three of which were published by the Company of Military Historians in 1974 (Vol. I), 1977 (Vol. II), and 1978 (Vol. III), and re-issued in a one-volume edition in 1980 by Scribner's (ISBN 0684168626). The present volume thus is continuously paginated with that edition, and thus subtitled Volume II for that reason; it is an entirely different publication than Volume II of the Company of Military Historians edition (1977), which contained a mere 230 pages compared to this volume's 700+ pages. It appears that the remaining installments, which would have comprised Parts 5 and 6, were never published. Exceedingly scarce. 017656

22 Campfire and Battlefield: A History of the Campaigns and Conflicts of the Great Civil War in the United States, The Spanish-American War, The War in the Philippines, The Boxer War in China [Scarce 648-pp. Edition, ca. 1902, w/ Expanded Civil War Coverage]
Johnson, Rossiter, w/ contributions by Gen. Oliver O. Howard, Gen. Selden Connor, Gen. John B. Gordon, Gen. John T. Morgan, Hon. James Tanner, and Mrs. L. C. Pickett
New York: Henry W. Knight, 1902. Enlarged Edition
Decorative Cloth Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Very Good. N/A Book
Dark blue cloth variant, illus. and lettered in gilt, decorated in blind. A section of the front cover along joint and partially extending into gilt title, as well as the top corner of the rear cover, show dampstaining, resulting in loss of color to the cloth, with a few small holes of loss as well, otherwise only light shelf wear with slight exposure at corners, light rubbing to spine extremities. Both areas are essentially only cosmetic defects and would be quite easy to restore simply by matching the cloth dye color (which we have not attempted). Spine panel shows light surface rubbing, and most of gilt lettering/decoration is dulled by age. Text block is clean and fully intact excepting a 1/2" closed tear along the fore-edges of the front flyleaf and succeeding frontis. leaf (Lincoln portrait), binding firm, hinges intact. 648 pp., 1000+ illus., "splendidly illustrated from the original photographs of the celebrated Brady Collection in the possession of the Government," with black and white photographs, reproduced engravings, full page color chromolithograph plates. Date approximate based on content; this edition expanded and revised, showing copyright dates of 1894 and 1896 on verso of main title but necessarily dating later, no earlier than 1902, given text on second main title (p. 549), commencing coverage of the latter three wars mentioned in the title. The Civil War coverage extends through p. 548, including the 1897 dedication of U. S. Grant's tomb (p. 546). Exceptional. RS192
